Bobcat Bonnie’s Brunch in the ‘D’ (Detroit)

I Love Brunch and Detroit

Brunch is the best of all worlds; breakfast, lunch, and cocktails. Ok, cocktails aren’t always necessary, but there’s something to be said for a little festive mimosa or bloody mary mixed with good company and conversation.

This makes for a lovely Sunday afternoon.

Since Detroit’s revival in the last few years, it’s been a treat to go downtown and explore the various new restaurants and revisit the classics.

I’ve made it my mission to find the best brunch spots in and around the Detroit area and beyond.

And I’m starting this adventure with Bobcat Bonnie’s.

Bobcat Bonnie’s

Located in a 150+ year-old brick building in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, this gastropub features fresh food and local flare. Known for their ‘smothered potatoes’, this fun brunch spot was featured on the Cooking Channel’s “Cheap Eats” segment.

Parking

There’s free parking in multiple lots on Harrison Street adjacent to the restaurant.

Wait

Expect a wait, especially on a Sunday. We arrived about 12:30pm on a Sunday, and had to wait about 45 minutes. It was worth it.

Beverages

If you’re into a bit of imbibing, their famous build your own bloody Mary and mimosa bar does not disappoint. It’s the largest and most diversified I’ve seen.

Filled with tons of types of hot sauces and spices and other extras like vegetables, olives, hot peppers, and cheese. For the mimosas, they offer a few different types of fresh-squeezed juices, and a bucket full of fruit to mix with the champagne.

A full bar with craft beer, wine, and spirits is also available. Which makes the wait time that much easier.

Menu

The menu is large and varied, offering items for vegans and meat lovers alike. They offer separate menus for brunch, shareables (appetizers), soups & salads, main courses, desserts, and specials.

If you’re a goat cheese fan, order the Fried Goat Cheese appetizer. You can thank me later.

These lightly deep-fried balls of goat cheese drizzled with honey and a sprinkle of pepper and lemon zest on a piece of naan are Deeeelicious!

While my friend and I shared the appetizer and each had a main of smothered potatoes, our necks hurt from gawking at all of the other yummy-looking plates of food coming out of the kitchen for our neighbors at other tables!

Noise Level

One thing to note is that since the restaurant has cement floors and brick walls, it can become quite loud. Especially during peak hours.

Wait Staff

The staff was friendly and seemed to be calm even though it was busy. Our waiter was also friendly but could have explained more about the restaurant as neither of us had been there before. For example, we had two jars of champagne sitting at our table for a while before we realized we needed to go to the bar and fill them up with goodies. While it may have seemed obvious, it wasn’t to us.

Last Thoughts

Overall this was a good experience. I would definitely go back and try something different.
